Self-praise is no recommendation
Friday 24th April 2020 – 17:30 It was a customer in a chip shop who said it. He had been listening to the owner droning on about how good his fish was, and how brilliant his chips, how superb the mushy peas and how his batter was superior in every way. After ten minutes of this monologue the customer spiked his guns with one phrase: "Self-praise is no recommendation," he said. I'd love to report that the fish-slinger fell immediately silent. He didn't. He droned on for another ten minutes until the bloke finally received his order and escaped into the night with a hunted look. That's how I feel when I hear President Trump (the man with the world's highest IQ let us remember) suggest it might be an idea to drink Domestos to combat coronavirus. Actually it's how I feel whenever I hear him speak because all he is interested in is saying how great he is. Nothing else matters. Certainly not the number of Americans dying around him.
