Putin on the Ritz
Friday 27th March – 12 noon
Somewhere in a dacha in the Moscow countryside Valdimir Putin is smiling. He is laying his plans. With Europe on its knees and America increasingly crippled as it will never be again, there is a fantastic opportunity for him to return to his favourite project, expanding Russia to re-absorb former soviet-dominated countries. Georgia and Belarus had better watch out.
Trump will do nothing. A bit of bluster and a couple of threats. But he will do nothing mostly because his country is falling apart over Coronavirus. Like us in the UK he made no practical plans for pandemic, ignored WHO warnings and is now suffering the consequences. NATO will do nothing without the US, and anyway are in knots over coronavirus themselves. They must be. The virus is no respecter of persons.
According to the Johns Hopkins University coronavirus map (constantly updated) Russia has 1036 cases and has suffered 3 deaths. Whether you believe that or not is up to you.
The only thing that might prevent Putin from action is the virus itself. If his figures are a construct, then there is the possibility that the armed forces are decimated by it and he can do nothing. No country reveals the numbers of its military that are affected by disease. Especially not Russia and the US who reveal nothing that can be useful to the old enemy.
In this sense, the pandemic might save us all. Instead of falling into a nightmare scenario of mutually assured destruction, everyone with their finger on the button will be in bed struggling for breath. But we don't know the truth. We can only guess. It's a bit like supermarket delivery slots. They exist, but no-one has ever seen them.
