Viral vocabulary – everything you need to know

Quarantine is giving us a new vocabulary. Here's my guide to the new words and their meanings.

• Furlough. Animal-lined edging to your embonpoint. Décoletage with attitude.

• Covid. A video made with a friend, neighbour or colleague.

• Antibodies. Australia

• R-number. Short for 'our number'. Used when 'our number' is lower than that of others. As in: "R-number has gone down to 0.6. Yours is still 1.4. Mneu-mneu-mneu-mneu-mneu."

• Trump. Flatulence caused by eating too much home-made bread.

8th August, 2020 Once again we face a high summer of inflatables, awash to the gunwales with refugees, trying desperately and at the risk of their lives, to get to Britain.  Here, in the country itself, everyone is exhausted by Covid-19. No-one wants to talk about it. It's all been said anyway. And if it hasn't, no-one wants to hear it. A word from our Covid Minister

Wednesday 1st April – 11am Thank you, Minister, for joining us on our radio programme and agreeing to answer questions from our listeners, especially when you are self-isolating. We are agog. Firstly then, a question from Mrs Edith Exasperated of Tunbridge Wells. "Thank you. Minister my question is very simple. Everyone agrees that the country doing best in the present crisis is South Korea. It borders China, where the outbreak began, and yet it is clearly mastering the virus's spread. The result is remarkably few deaths. Other countries using different methods like us have deaths already in the thousands. Why aren't we doing what the Korean are doing?" This is war!

Monday 30th March I've had enough. The government has given us nothing to combat the virus with. No advice, no weapons, no training. Waiting for the politicos to act is tantamount to suicide. One may as well throw oneself down on the ground breathing deeply through the nose and mouth making access as easy as possible for any passing virus. Something has to be done. But we are being left to ourselves. Very well, then, I accept the challenge. The plan of action is simple, aggressive and, I am persuaded, highly effective. I begin by stuffing two carefully shaped shallots into my nostrils plugging them completely. Then I force as many garlics into my cheeks as possible, really making the skin stretch. It may seem primitive, but in the asbence of anything better, we have to protect ourselves, and frankly, as I observe my handiwork in the mirror, I am quietly confident. I'd like to see any virus get past that lot.
