Latest from China

Further intelligence reaches me from Central China. Hubei Province to be precise. Here, my good friend (a Chinese teacher of English) who lives just down the road from Wuhan, the one-time epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak, writes to tell me the latest. It makes interesting reading. The repetititions are a response to my questions to her and the desire to get messages out before an internet connection drops out. Neither of us know when this might happen. Her responses therefore come piecemeal, in short single-message bursts. I have threaded them together to make more sense.

"Now, our life is gradually returning back to normal," she writes.

"Students in some provinces have gone back to school or will. But Hubei Province will be the last to allow students back to school, so we're still having classes on line. Now there are some imported cases and asymptomatic cases in China. Therefore we're still urged to wear masks in public places. Sorry to see the worse situations in Britain and other countries. Hope we human beings can defeat it as soon as possible.

"People in almost all fields have gone back to work, but cinemas and other similar places still remain closed. Most schools have allowed students back except those in Hubei Province so we still have classes at home.

"We didn't test everyone, just those with symptoms or having contact with confirmed cases. Now since there are more and more imported cases and asymptomatic cases, all people coming to China from overseas will be quarantined and get tested.

"People everywhere are all very creative during the lockdown, some showing their enthusiasm for music or art or cooking or baking, some coming up with a lot of funny ideas. And social media provide good platforms for people to share and in turn inspire more creations. Take good care of yourself and stay well.

She ends with this, "We human beings can finally defeat the virus. The time it takes depends on the measures taken."

Well, quite. I'm forwarding this to B Johnson.
