Stupidity unmasked

Monday 4th May 2020 – 7pm

To mask or not to mask? That is the question.

In fact it isn't. The government departments have declared that there is no evidence to suggest...etc. That's true of course. But it is irrelevant. For many deacdes there was no evidence to suggest that smoking was bad for you. There is, even now, no evidence to suggest that climbing very high mountains is dangerous. We just know it is. But there is no evidence to suggest it. No tests have been done. No reports written. No universities have backed research on it. There is simply no evidence on the subject.

Similarly there is no evidence to suggest that sensible things will be said if government departments are approached to say whether face masks are of any use. They will merely say there is no evidence to suggest it. Equally there is no evidence to suggest wearing face masks are not of any use. If there is no evidence, there is no evidence. Either way. They aren't saying the absence of evidence proves there is no point to wearing them, or that the absence of evidence suggests wearing them is stupid, they are just saying that there is no evidence to prove it's sensible. Rather like there is no evidence that they are sensible to say that. If there is no evidence to prove that, why on earth would we listen to them? But we do.

We go around muttering that there is no evidence to suggest masks are worth a fig. And we say that with big solemn faces as if to say that we don't do anything, or say anything, or make any decisions about anything without there being evidence to suggest it's sensible. But that is palpable nonsense. We made decisions all the time without 'evidence to suggest'.

Lots of peoples, all over the world wear face masks. That isn't evidence of anything except that people all over the world wear masks despite there being 'no evidence to suggest' there's any point to it. But until the 1950s there was no evidence to suggest that smoking provoked lung cancer. Are we to say that those who gave up smoking before this were fools as there was no 'evidence to suggest'?

I'm going to wear one, and put up with the increasingly silent cry of the oafs who would say I'm acting irrationally to do so. Not one of them has produced any evidence to suggest that their chosen path is backed by evidence suggesting they are right! Why? Because there is simply no evidence either way.

My daughter has spent part of her furlough making face masks. She has perfected the design and manufacture. She is deft and clever, and has just received her first request from an NHS worker for one.

Obviously this NHS worker is a fool and acting irrationally.

FFS.
